Catalina Airport is only a short hop from the mainland (Southern California) though you'll fell like a thousand miles away. One can hang at the airport, grab  a Buffalo burger and take a short nature walk. Explore further by renting their Trek bikes. If you're planning on making it a full day or weekend trip than take the shuttle to either Avalon or Two Harbors. Avalon is where the action and might life is with numerous lodging and resturants. Two Harbors: One restaurant and one resort: The Banning House. (Very romantic and peaceful).
